unbelievable

Its hillarious how people give bad reviews to be funny, like the guy before me. I was giggling when i read his post, his words almost scream with a mock sarcasm.

This was incredible, the animation was near meanstream disney quaility, the art looked very lion king/ disney styled as well, Thats a good thing! You could easily go get work from them!!!

If your trying to go solo though, some pointers:

Voices: They where pretty bad quality, try to get a new mic, and go download audacity to clean your files.

Mood: Some of the parts delivered, the funny parts perticularly, where timed bad. You could have accented it a bit more in the screenplay.Maybe made it more grandiose and more impacted by having a huge orchestra play with him as he sings and a glow surround him as the simpleton looks on with his jaw hanging.

Plot: Hopefully this plays up to something but all i gather was... some kind waits to see all his people, the huge line being his people? And some guy with something in his arms (bongo drum?) comes to see him. It didnt have much substance and should have extended it. One thing the guy before me was right about was there wasnt much to be continued. The animation as a whole seemed fragmented, and left you feeling indifferent.

Otherwise, awsome, keep it up.

Good,

It was good, the art was very good as far as art goes. Though some of the BKG's where a bit fudged it was al good (Photo shop bkgs are to WTG in my opinion)

But, it was lacking in certain areas. Animation, sound, and mood.

Animation: Its very hard to meet high quality art with high quality animation. The only one who pulls that off is adam phillips in my mind. And fallen angel, but thats different becuase its symbol... Not that symbols are a bad thing, but FBF beats out symbol in my mind, it has a much more desireable quality, especially for action scenes. Which is why in most symbol animatiopns there is something to be desired. But i dont want to rant about symbol verses FBF, i say combine them. The first half was really cool with the slick music and very cool looking cowboy. But when he walked in the animation changed and his feet kind of sped up suddenly like he was doing a speed walk. I would have stuck with symbols on that and made it some kind of slo-mo echoing chink of his boots on the floor. The fight scene was , so-so, by that i mean all you really saw was some tweens of the guns moving up, lots of paning and white flash. The monster was very well done though. But the hero didnt display much, just sticking some guns up and white flashes that left me more confused than anything. My suggestion, watch some bebop and see how they did things with spike. Or maybe Vash, if its a solem shooter just have the guns slide up very cool like with light flashing off the metal, maybe go matrixy with a slo-mo clip of the gun firing and the chambers ejecting, or maybe go more action and have him ducking and moving around, dicing behind things as the monster tries to tear him limb from limb as he pumps lead into its head.

Sound, to be blunt the quality was very bad and the sound hit 0 ALOT (hitting zero means the audio becomes so over-the-top it gets distorted and staticy) its none to pleasent for the ears. Although your choice of sound and music was very good, it needed to be cleaned up much more. You might invest is adobe audition, it has a sound cleaner and a suppressor (so make the quality better, get the fuzz out, the suppressor could help it keep from hitting 0 all the time)

Mood: As far as art and sound choice went, it was very good. Accept that you made the beast, the setting and the hero very dark and serious. But then you had kind of goofy gawking looking bystanders that kind of killed it, along with the akward walking scene it took away from it a bit. Maybe dont try to easy way out so much, (such as cutting to a blood splatter or making the whole screen tween white) if you want economic animation and still maintain art it will be more time consuming, but if you say, when the hero shoot his gun have just a high quality animation of his hands retrieving the guns (with the camera following the movements of course) the from under his breast to the top of his head firing with the shels ejecting, then the upper half of the beast struggling around and getting pelted it would take you half the time it would if you tryed to animate his whole body FBF.

My last tip, advice, hint. Whatever, is use still cells as much as you can get away with. If the hero doesnt need to move, just have him standing still a single lifeless cel, if its going to be a while that the cam is on him, add in some eye blinks. That makes it so you can conentrate your time on action part and not divide the workload with stuff like dialolgue or unimprotant things. Like when he walks into the bar you could have pulled that whole thing off up into the monster with just two cels, on front view, which you have, and one tweened side view. (if you can tweak it so it doesnt look too funny, that is)

Anyways, thats my two cents. But as far as anime this is the best attempt at anime ive ever seen on newgrounds. Period.

Good,

Well done, but try not to rip off other movies animations so much. Most of it was ripped from jackie chan movies, or naruto. The art was very lacking, and although the style was very action packed, right when i hit play i was basically watching the opening scene from any naruto episode. Next time, choreograph it yourself. Then ill be impressed.

Good

On terms of flash skills and art, your pretty good. Your style is nice and i hope to see more than pointless "depression based" subject matter from you from now on. Not only has the subject matter been done to death, (no pun intended) But it really doesnt convey any message other than "Some people are f*cked up" I wont debate any more on the topic, just turn over a leaf, we dont need another godamn firth around here.

Very Nice

This toon was very good, it had its own mood and the voices where very very good, the animation was good as well. Just a few suggestions.

At some parts in the movie the sound would hit 0, or spike to its limit and distort. It makes it sound harsh and just bad, You can fix that by lowering the volume. In the case that the audio is already bad to start with, you can clean that up by getting a audio program like cool edit pro or Adobe Audition, or have someone who has the program to clean it for you. Check around on some forums.

Your animation is good, MUCH better than most out there so take this crit purely as constructivly because so far your pretty good in this area. Heres something to improve. Some of the mouth movements are unconvincing, though you can hide this by hiding the characters mouth or zooming the scene out a bit. But if you take some time making a few symbols for each mouth shape you can make a convinving lip sync. Just practice by taking your mirror and seeing how your mouth looks when saying certain vowel, letters and such. Then try to draw that, make it a symbol. And swap them out when the character talks.

Next bit of crit would be suspense. Some of the spots in here are a bit sudden. Such as waking up and finding the Gnome guy in a tree. You could milk that, have the main char look around for a bit calling for him till he find him in the tree. Next, try brushing up on the anatomy a bit becuase some part the guys look a bit strange. And also try to clean up your lineart for the chars. And lastly, use a bit of symbol animation here or there to put some life into your talking parts. Like head movements and eyes movements instead of solely making a statue char with only thier mouth moving.

Great stuff man, keep it up, hope to see some improvements next installation!

SirGaryColeman responds:

About the sound... I'm not sure if it's your speakers, but it sounds fine to me. I actually did use cooledit too. Maybe it was just playing loud and that's why it sounded weird? I didn't really try playing it at super high volumes, so maybe I'll just lower the overall volume in the future in case some speakers make it sound crappy.

Marvelous

You've nearly restored my belief in the front page! This work in absolutly brilliant... the type of things you might have expected from the old disney or pixar. The bakgrounds where very well done, and beautiful. It made me laugh everytime when some got hit randomly with a rock lol. The SFX where perfect and the story was good as well. Just awsome, no crits about it.

JeremyLokken responds:

You're comparing it to Disney and Pixar! Thanks for the compliments.

Bloody brilliant!

I have to say, you guys nailed it.... but since your looking for some suggestions and comments.

First of all, the art was incredible... KEEP IT UP!!! i love your style and i hope all other submissions are just as entertaining!

Alright, i understand a certain sacrafice comes with Making top notch graphics... becuase just making each detail is really time consuming (like the red fire scene... amazing), but you guys did a wonderfull job of keeping the art consistant and beautifull, obviously your all talented artists.

Alright, the next is the animation. Strictly speaking i didnt see much animation that impressed me a whole lot or was that much advanced, When people did simple movments it was rather puppetlike. And seemed like you used symbols a whole lot, and just tweened the motion. The problem with this is it gets rather boring at sometimes where the characters walking as just torso's bobbing up and down. One thing that very hard to pull off is realism, becuase if you animate a human, humans already have a pre concieved notion about how a human stands, walks... etc So when somone is walking you expect to see the body bobbing slightly, the hands waving, and some cloth movement besides size tween manipulated actions (like the rapid reduction of symbol size kind of collapsing then expanding into the action) So maybe something to work on there. Next, maybe try to do a little FBF animation, like in the arrow sequence where the gaurd was shot. It would have been cool to see him flip around and just get plowed and see him fly up against the tree with lots of force. Rather than a few arrows thudding in and having another tweened collapse. But then again, FBF animation at your high of a detail is EXTREMELY hard and something that professionals would only take on. Thats why balancing art detail and animation is important on indie animations. Last on animation criticism, is the effects.... TWEENED CAMERA!!! is al i have to say. Getting a flash scripted camera is a godsend.. it works just like a normal camera would except its imported into flash and you can do all the focus shots, pans, zooms you want without the pain of tweening layers. That alone would have added more impact if when the arrow hit the camera jerked and waved as it hit.

Next tidbit of critisism is some of the 'plot twists' came out a bit corny. Like the suspicious old guy... giving the traditional "muahhahahaha!!! i fooled you, now i will enact my evil plan on this new information I just so happened to stumble across!" Its sort of after-school speacial-ish. After all, the building block of any film, animation.. etc. Is plotline, story, and convincing characters.

Alright, so to recap is, deepen your plot twists a bit. Work on character development, blance out animation with your holy crap awsome art. And GET ACTIONSCRIPT CAMERA! And use it! alot! And keep up the good work, nothing has impressed me this much since Bitey of brackenwood! (Grovels before the perfect animator that is Adam) And if you need some good opinions from really talented people check out the double you double you double you dot biteycastle dot com forums (the guy who made prowlies at the river's site, and there is where you can ask for a scripted camera) and i heard Synj's forums where helpfull too, there at double you double you double you dot synj dot net (there related! help with art and newgrounds stuff i swear so dont hurt me!)
